As Kenyans approach the 2022 general elections, one thing remains given. Choosing the incumbent president isn’t an option. After all, he has already completed his two terms, and that’s the limit going by the constitution. H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta may not be an option, but Kenyans have other candidates to consider. There are several presidential candidates. Who are these options hopeful of succeeding the president? Here is a discussion of the list of Kenya presidential candidates in 2022.
David Mwaura Waihiga
The first on our list of Kenya presidential candidates in 2022 is David Mwaura Waihiga. He is a senior counsel by profession. It is also important to note that he is the father of Waihiga Mwaura, a journalist best known for hosting a political television show on Citizen T.V. The presidential candidate will be vying for the presidency as the flag bearer of the Agano Party.
It may be the first time David vies for the presidency, but he has been on the ballot before. He contested for the Kamukunji parliamentary seat back in 2007. It wasn’t during that year’s general election but rather a by-election following the nullification of the election of Simon Mbugua due to irregularities. Unfortunately, he didn’t emerge the winner. He was also ready to serve as the governor of Nairobi County after the impeachment of Mike Sonko, but the election day never materialized.
Professor George Wanjakoya
Professor Wanjakoya is also on the list of Kenya presidential candidates in 2022. His name is new in the Kenyan political arena. Nevertheless, that hasn’t seemed to stop him from vying for the top political seat. He will be contesting on a Roots Party ticket. Besides politics, George Wanjakoya is a lawyer and a priest.
Wanjakoya has promised quite some unusual promises to the electorates if they give him a chance to serve them. One of them is the legalization of bhang. That hasn’t happened since Kenya got its independence about six decades ago. However, the professor is ready to make it happen if elected.
Hon. Raila Odinga
Raila Odinga is a household name in Kenyan politics. As a matter of fact, his name on the list of Kenya presidential candidates in 2022 doesn’t surprise many. It is the 5th time that he will be vying for the presidency. The other four have been unsuccessful, but he is hopeful that this is his time. He will be the flag bearer of the Azimio One Kenya Alliance Coalition.
Raila has held other elective and appointive posts in the past. For example, he was once the Member of Parliament for Lang’ata Constituency and the Prime Minister between 2008 and 2013. He has also served in the ministries of Energy as well as Roads, Public Works, and Housing.
H. E. Dr. William Ruto
Last but not least on our list of Kenya presidential candidates in 2022 is H.E. Dr. William Ruto. He is the current deputy president of Kenya. He has held the seat for almost a decade and plans to succeed his current boss, H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta. The candidate will be vying for the presidential seat on a Kenya Kwanza coalition ticket.
In addition to being the deputy president, Ruto has also served Kenyans in other capacities. For instance, he was the Member of Parliament for Eldoret North Constituency. He has also served in several ministries, including Home Affairs, Agriculture, and Higher Education.
Final Words: Kenya Presidential Candidates in 2022
Currently, they are on the list of Kenya presidential candidates in 2022. However, that’s bound to change after the August 9th general elections.
